No More Ear Pain on Flights: What Actually Works for Me

I used to have severe ear pain from the pressure of descent and had bad hearing for a day or two after a flight. After trial, error, tears, and a few very uncomfortable flights, I have a system that keeps me out of pain and hearing clearly. Disclaimer: I have no medical training — this is simply what my doctor recommended years ago and what has consistently worked for me.
When talking to my doctor, I was assured that my ears not popping for a day or two was not permanently damaging my hearing and that eased my mind a lot.
To help with the pressure itself, I use a nasal spray before each flight and EarPlanes® on the descent. I’ve heard decongestant pills work as well.
A lot of people chew gum to encourage their ears to equalize pressure. What works for me is a carbonated drink and taking a big swallow. If you try it, just be careful when opening your bubbly beverage at altitude - pressure buildup can make it fizz over!
Anything else you have tried to alleviate ear pressure pain?
